Mount Kenya (Lenana, 4985 m). Sirimon - Chogoria traverse

Mount Kenya, climbing Lenana Peak (4985 m). Sirimon - Chogoria traverse

This is one of the most popular African trekking tours. It connects two of Kenya's most scenic routes, Sirimon and Chogoria, creating an amazingly varied and exciting hike. Descending west of Mount Kenya, Sirimon runs along the dry side of the mountain with its giant trees and rocky landscape, while the descent down the Chogoria Trail is completely different with its lush bamboo and alpine forests.

  • During the tour, you will summit of  Point Lenana (4985 m). This is the only peak that you can climb without using climbing equipment.
  • The other two peaks Nelion (5188 m) and Batian (5199 m) can be climbed with experience of technical ascents and special climbing equipment.

Day 2
After meeting at the Nairobi airport, we will have a transfer to the city of Nanyuki (about 5 hours), where we will have lunch. Further, on the way to the gate of Sirimon Park (2660 m), you will cross the equator. From the gates of the park, we climb up through a magnificent mountain forest, bamboo and a zone of giant heather, before reaching the high-altitude moorland and our first hut, the Old Moses camp (3300 m). Here we will have dinner and overnight stay. It is an easy crossing - 9 km, which takes 3-4 hours with an elevation difference of 680 meters.

Day 3
After breakfast we go up the trail to the fork and soon we will come to the river. After a break by the water, we will continue our movement along the trail, cross the Ontulili River, then turn right, outlining the moorland, and cross the Northern Liki River. Further, the trail leads up to the McKinders Valley, from where a panoramic view of the valley opens towards the Shipton Camp (4200 m), which is located below the high peaks and glaciers. Constant population - rock hyrax and sunbirds. Travel time 7 hours, distance 14 km, climb 900 m

Day 4
For your best acclimatization, we have a day of rest at Shipton Camp today. Here are available short walks / day hikes (summit climb) to the peaks of the Oblong and Hausberg mountains with a rise in altitude of 370 m. After these walks, we return to our camp for lunch. In the afternoon you have free time.
Note: Climbing up and deep sleep is great for acclimatization. But you can keep acclimating when you are just watching eagles in the sun!

Day 5
Today we have an early rise at 3 o'clock in the morning. We have to get to the top - Lenana point (4985 m), just in time to catch the African sunrise. The climb starts along frozen talus and continues along a rocky path with small ascents. On a good moon, you hardly need flashlights. Without the moon, you will have a beautiful starry sky. The climb takes 3-4 hours. And here you will find gorgeous panoramic views, including views of Mount Kilimanjaro, which is located approximately 340 km to the south. After resting and admiring the gorgeous views, we begin our descent to the Mintos hut (4200 m), where we will have breakfast. After a short rest, we will continue our descent further to the Bandas hut (2900 m). We walk along the valley with gorges, where you can enjoy beautiful views of the mountain Temples, Lake Michaelson, mushroom rocks (stone mushrooms) and Giants billiards table Mountain. Dinner and overnight at the Bandas hut. Here you can enjoy the wood-burning fireplace, take a hot shower and relax in bed. Travel time 11-12 hours, climb 785 m, descent 2085 m.
