Great volcanic journey through Kamchatka. Climbing Klyuchevskaya Sopka and Ushkovsky volcano

Do not miss your opportunity to see all the beauties of Kamchatka on a single tour of the year. On this tour you will climb 2 volcanoes: acclimatization ascent to Ushkovsky volcano (3949 m) and most importantly to Klyuchevskaya Sopka (4850 m). You will walk over glaciers and climb the passes. And what nature is here! You will remember this tour for a lifetime.

  • Klyuchevskaya Sopka is the highest active volcano in Eurasia with a height of 4850 meters. Over the past year, it has erupted for more than six months and is rightfully considered the most active volcano in Kamchatka.
  • Klyuchevskaya is located in the central part of Kamchatka away from roads and settlements. This ideal stratovolcano is surrounded by other giant peaks. Klyuchevskaya Sopka is on the list of peaks for the title of the Snow Leopard of Russia. Every year we organize an expedition to this region of Kamchatka to climb to the top.

Day 1

We are starting our adventure. Meeting participants at the airport. Meet, pick up luggage and start the journey. We are going to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, after checking into the hostel we arrange an introductory walk around the capital of Kamchatka.

Day 2

We leave for the north of Kamchatka. We will spend the whole day on the road, changing transport, to the foot of the volcanoes of Central Kamchatka. First, we will go to the village of Kozyrevsk, located 500 kilometers to the north, and then on a prepared off-road vehicle we will get to the beginning of our route - Mount Kopyto. From here we will see for the first time the highest volcanoes of Kamchatka - Kamen 'and Klyuchevskoy. If the volcanologists' house is free, we will spend the night in it, if not, in tents.

Day 3

Breakfast, the beginning of our hiking route (a real tourist hike) towards the Studenaya river. In the morning, a short hike to the camp at the Baranye Rocks, from where you can enjoy a stunning view of the Tolbachik volcano. We will stop for lunch at the Studenaya river. In summer, the river dries up completely and it becomes possible to descend into the canyon, the height of which reaches thirteen meters. In the evening we will come to a small spring, the only source of water in this place. Overnight in tents. Day trip - 16 km.

Day 4

In the morning breakfast, packing up the camp. Today we will set off towards Klyuchevskaya Sopka. We will cross the dry bed of the Studenaya river, stop for lunch at Lake Bogdanovich. In the evening we will set up a camp at the foot of the Bogdanovich glacier. Overnight in tents. Day trip - 10 km.

Day 5

In the morning breakfast, packing up the camp. Today we will go towards the sites near the Ushkovsky volcano. In the morning we will climb the tongue of the Bogdanovich glacier. On the way, streams and waterfalls formed by the melting of the glacier, as well as mountains of volcanic ash await us. The glacier is fraught with many cracks covered with snow, so let's go in bundles. In the evening we will go to Little Antarctica - to a giant ice plateau lying between the four highest volcanoes of Kamchatka. This place gives rise to the largest glaciers in Russia - Bogdanovich in the south and Erman in the north. The plateau is 2700 meters above sea level. Overnight in tents at the foot of the Ushkovsky volcano. Day trip - 11 km.

Day 6

Today we have an acclimatization ascent to Ushkovsky volcano. For a successful ascent to the top of Kamchatka - Klyuchevskaya Sopka, we need to undergo acclimatization at an altitude of about 4000 meters. Volcano Ushkovsky is also called Ploskaya Dalnyaya because of its shape. The ascent will take place along the eastern slope with a steepness of 30-35 degrees and usually takes 8-9 hours. The descent follows the ascent path. An excellent view of the northern slopes of the Klyuchevskoy volcano opens from the top. In the evening we will return to the camp, overnight in tents. Day trip - 13 km.

Day 7

In the morning breakfast, packing up the camp. Today we will set off towards Klyuchevskaya Sopka. On this day we will cross the Little Antarctica plateau. Between the highest volcanoes of Kamchatka, Kamen and Klyuchevskoy, there is the Volkanologov pass (3300 m). On this pass there is a small house that serves as a shelter for rare groups of climbers. In the evening we will gain strength before the assault on the Klyuchevskoy volcano. Overnight in tents or a house. Day trekking - 9 km.

Day 8

Today is a very early rise for the entire trip. At 2 AM we start climbing Klyuchevskaya Sopka (4850 m). The entire ascent to the top of Kamchatka takes about 13 hours. We have to gain about 1,500 meters in height along loose slopes in crampons. An incredible sight awaits us at the top - the crater of a real active volcano. The descent follows the ascent path. We will spend the night at the Vulcanologists pass in tents or a house. It is important to understand: Klyuchevskaya Sopka is the most active volcano in Kamchatka. During the active phase of the eruption, the ascent to the summit will not take place, as it is too dangerous for life. Day trip - 12 km.

Day 9

Extra day in case of bad weather. Yes, yes ... the weather is capricious and changeable ..

Day 10

The beginning of our return journey. From the Vulkanologov pass we will descend along the Schmidt glacier, flowing eastward. From here you can see the grandiose eastern slope of the Kamen volcano. As a result of a gigantic explosion, a two-kilometer sheer wall was formed, which has not yet conquered any climber. We spend the night at the eastern slope of Klyuchevskaya Sopka in tents. Day hike - 7 km.

Day 11

Today is the final day of our walking route, we descend to the Apakhonchich base. The path will pass through the fields of volcanic ash left by the eruptions of the Klyuchevskoy volcano. After lunch, we will stop at the house of the Apakhonchich field base. It was created in 1960 for the scientific work of the Institute of Volcanology and serves as a shelter for tourist groups. Overnight in a cabin or tents. Day trip - 10 km.

Day 12

We get ready and in a prepared off-road vehicle we move to the village of Klyuchi. The village is located at the foot of the extinct volcano Zarechny on the banks of the Kamchatka River. From any street you can see the slopes of the nearest volcanoes - Klyuchevsky and Shiveluch. A hotel and a Russian bath await us here. Day travel - 50 km.

Day 13

Today we have a long journey, we are returning to the capital of Kamchatka. The distance between the village of Klyuchi and Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky is 600 kilometers. In the evening, after a long journey and checking into a hotel, we will celebrate our return to one of the city's restaurants.

Day 14

We will visit the fish market, where we will tell you which caviar and red fish are best to bring to your friends. We go to the airport and say goodbye.
