Mount Kenya (Lenana, 4985 m). Chogoria - Sirimon traverse

Mount Kenya, climbing Lenana Peak (4985 m). Chogoria - Sirimon traverse

We highly recommend this particular route starting in Chogoria. It is perhaps the most magnificent for climbing the top of Mount Kenya (Lenana peak, 4985 m). This is the driest route to climb to the top, and the walk is truly breathtaking. Your descent from the summit will be on the other side along the Sirimon route, which will take you along beautiful forest trails and completes the ascent to the mountain.

  • During the tour, you will climb to the top of Lenana (4985 m). This is the only peak that you can climb without using climbing equipment.
  • The other two peaks Nelion (5188 m) and Batian (5199 m) can be climbed with experience of technical ascents and special climbing equipment.

Day 1
Meeting at the Nairobi airport. By the time of arrival of the plane, options: check into a hotel in Nairobi or immediately transfer to the area of Chogoria (approximately 5 hours).

Day 2
We start from the city of Nairobi at 08:00. Our trip will pass through the agricultural country to the town of Chogoria, where we will have lunch. After lunch, we take 4x4 and drive up to the edge of the bamboo forest, the park gate, where we start our trekking through the dense bamboo forest. Distance 10 km to Bandas hut (2900 m). Here we have dinner and overnight.

Day 3
After breakfast and sorting of goods by porters, we calmly and naturally set off upward. There are two route options. A longer walk across Lake Ellis, which gives scenic views of Mugi, Ithanguni and the Giants Billiards Table, while the second option, if we follow the river upstream (about 3 km), foreground scenery and flora especially beautiful. We will have lunch on the bank of the stream, then we will go around the left side of the hill and reach our camp - camping on Lake Ellis at an altitude of about 3600 m. This is a calm place away from any of the more "tourist" areas.

Day 4
We have an early start today. We walk up the ridge for about 3 hours to eventually join the hiking trail on the regular Chogoria trail at an altitude of about 4100 m.You will have a breathtaking view of the valley of the gorges and the opposite side of Ithanguni and the Northern Moorlands. Rest and lunch will be at a small intersection of the stream, after which we continue our movement for another hour to the Mintos hut, where we spend the night. Mintos Hut (4300 m) is a hut with a great location on a plateau overlooking Lake Michaelson, which will be 300 m below our camp. After lunch, you can relax at the camp, although we recommend that you take the 10-minute walk to the "Temple", and it is worth it. It is a 150-meter vertical cliff that gets its name from its location. Visitors often take this position, looking over the edge - they look like they are praying. Early retreat is advised today as we will have an early rise to try to summit the next day.

Day 5
The pre-dawn summit attempt begins at 03:00. It will take you about three hours to reach the Lenana summit (4985 m). Climbers must be there in time to see the African sunrise. And here you will find gorgeous panoramic views, including views of Mount Kilimanjaro, which is located approximately 340 km to the south. Descent to Shipton Camp (4200 m) for dinner and overnight.

Day 6
After breakfast, you will begin a 5-hour descent through the Mackinder`s Valley to Old Moses Camp (3300 m). The descent is gentle and allows plenty of time to enjoy the breathtaking scenery, including the moorlands, before reaching your camp. Return to Nairobi late in the evening.
