Brief information about the region

Located in a gorge near the Shahdag (Shahdag) peak of the Greater Caucasus Range, the village of Khinalig is located 57 km southwest of the district center Guba. The village is located at an altitude of 2200 meters above sea level. The 5000-year-old settlement is the homeland of the Khinalyg people, who are the remnants of the ancient Caucasian Albanian tribes. The Khinalig people, who call themselves "Ketish", belong to the Shahdag group of language families with their own unique mother tongue. Currently, the main economic activity in the village is animal husbandry, but the terraced landscape on the banks of the nearby Gudial River is a testament to once widespread dryland farming practices. The Khinalig village has a huge tourism potential, especially for mountain tourism, due to its favorable location in a mountainous area. Routes leading to the highest peaks of Azerbaijan (Bazarduzu, Bazaryurd, Shahdag, Tufandag, etc.) pass through Khinalig. Around the village there are numerous waterfalls, caves and natural springs, which creates conditions for active tourism. Guest houses and other tourist facilities operating in the village have become the main source of income for the local population. Another mountain settlement, located about 9 km east of Khinalig, the village of Galakhudat is also an interesting place to visit. Galakhudat is located on the left bank of the Gudial River, southeast of the Gyzylgaya massif. The village is located just 2 kilometers from the main road Guba-Khinalyg. The name Galahudat in Persian means "ruler's fortress", and it is believed that this area was one of the main residences of the rulers of the Guba Khanate. The village is inhabited by ethnic Azerbaijanis engaged in animal husbandry. However, in recent years, local residents have shown an increased interest in tourism, offering accommodation and catering services to tourists. Eco-tour Khinalig - Galakhudat is an easy hiking trail, which is very convenient for beginners and hikers. The tourist trail passes along the old road Guba-Susai-Khyinalig. At the beginning of the trail, travelers can see the entire ancient section of the Khinalig village. Further, during the hike, a rocky landscape and subalpine meadows of the Gyzylgaya massif are visible on the left, and the Gudial River and the Greater Caucasus Range with the majestic peaks of Khinalig (3713 m) and Tufandag (Tufandag, 4191 m). Nearby, on the banks of the Gudial River, there is another settlement - the village of Bostankesh. The inhabitants of this village are also Khinalig people who moved to this area in the not so distant past.
